In a direct reply on X, he clarified that AI4 is sufficient to achieve Full Self-Driving safety levels "very far above human" — meaning current Tesla vehicles don't need to be retrofitted with AI5 to reach unsupervised autonomy.

Instead, AI5 is optimized for two next-generation workloads:

Optimus humanoid robots — which require efficient real-time inference on a mobile, power-constrained platform. Dexterous manipulation, balance, and environmental awareness all demand low-latency neural network processing that can't depend on cloud connectivity.

Supercomputer clusters — where AI5 chips will be packed onto server boards in configurations of 5 to 12 chips per board, forming the backbone of Tesla's training infrastructure for FSD v15 and future Optimus models.

This move is strategically elegant: it protects the value of every Tesla on the road today while freeing Tesla's next-generation silicon to chase higher-margin applications. Existing Tesla owners aren't being left behind, and Tesla avoids a costly fleet-wide hardware retrofit.

Why It Matters for Optimus

Optimus has always been Tesla's most compute-hungry project. Unlike a car — which operates in a relatively constrained environment with a predictable sensor suite — a humanoid robot needs to interpret unstructured environments, manipulate objects of varying weights and shapes, and respond to human speech and gesture in real time.

Tesla's current FSD software runs on a neural network with roughly one billion parameters. FSD v15 is expected to use a model roughly ten times larger, and Optimus models will likely scale similarly. AI5 provides the on-device inference headroom these models demand.

AI6 and Dojo3 Already in Progress

Musk confirmed that Tesla isn't waiting for AI5 to ship before moving on. The AI6 chip — reportedly contracted exclusively with Samsung — is already in development and expected to tape out in December 2026, with mass production targeted for 2027. A single AI6 is expected to roughly double the computing power of AI5.

Tesla's Dojo3 supercomputer chip is also progressing. Musk has publicly stated that Tesla has shortened its chip R&D cycle to approximately nine months — a cadence that would significantly outpace NVIDIA and AMD's roughly yearly cadence for new AI processors.

Timeline

The Bigger Picture
