Rightsholders to Elvis Presley's music have filed a federal copyright suit against Anthropic covering 274 songs, seeking $41 million and alleging the catalogue was used to train Claude without permission.
Anthropic has been here before and not always on the losing side. It previously defeated music publishers' attempt to block AI training in a separate case over song lyrics, which is a different question from whether training on a catalogue is itself infringing. A suit specifying 274 works and a dollar figure is a narrower, more enumerable claim than the lyrics case was.
The timing is what makes this more than a routine filing. Anthropic filed its S-1 this month showing $16.3 billion in first-half revenue, and a prospectus requires disclosing material litigation. A $41 million claim is not material against those numbers on its own; a precedent about training data would be.
