Uber has expanded OpenAI's ChatGPT Work from a 1,000-employee pilot to more than 30,000 staff, with GPT-6.1 Sol as the default model and connectors into Google Drive, Gmail, Calendar and Slack. Engineering teams continue using Codex separately.
Two details are more useful than the headcount. About 80% of early adopters were non-engineers, which is the number that decides whether an enterprise rollout is a developer tool or an operations change. And Uber paired 30 AI engineers with business teams in two-week "AI pods" rather than issuing licences and a training deck - a deployment model that costs real engineering time and is the part most companies skip.
The context is harder. The rollout comes weeks after Uber cut 3,300 corporate roles. The company has not drawn a line between the two, and nobody should draw one for them on this evidence, but the sequence is now familiar enough to notice: American Express announced 3,500 cuts framed around AI in the same month, alongside raised guidance.
