Gnani.ai is one of four companies the government named under the IndiaAI Mission for indigenous foundation models, tasked specifically with a speech-to-speech model.
Speech is where the case for Indian-built models is strongest. Global speech models are trained overwhelmingly on English and a handful of European languages, and degrade on Indian languages, accents and code-switching between them. A speech-to-speech model avoids the usual transcribe, translate and re-synthesise chain, which compounds errors at every step.
