Most AI Stock Lists Are Padded. Here Is What Is Actually AI.

Five listed companies are genuinely AI businesses: SpaceX, Cerebras, MiniMax, Z.ai and CoreWeave. Anthropic has filed as ANT and OpenAI has not filed at all. Cerebras priced at $185 and traded at $110.82 last week. A factual reference, not a recommendation - no stock here is ranked or rated.

THE SHORT VERSION

● Frontier model labs you can buy: one - SpaceX (SPCX), which owns SpaceXSI, the company that builds Grok
● Large-model companies listed anywhere: MiniMax (0100.HK) and Z.ai, formerly Zhipu (2513.HK), both Hong Kong, both January 2026
● AI hardware: Cerebras (CBRS), which IPO'd at $185 and traded at $110.82 on 23 October
● Not listed: Anthropic has filed as ANT; OpenAI has not filed and points at 2027
● The catch: most "AI stock" lists run to 85+ names by counting any company that mentioned AI

This is not investment advice. It is a factual reference of which AI companies have listed shares, what they do, and how much of each business is actually AI. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell anything, no stock is ranked, and we are not financial advisers. Prices move; verify any figure against the exchange before acting on it.

Most lists titled "AI stocks" run to eighty or more names, because they count every company that said the word on an earnings call. The useful question is narrower: which listed companies are actually AI businesses, and which are large businesses with an AI line item? Here is the first group.

Only one listed company builds a frontier model

SpaceX priced at $135.00 on 11 June 2026 and began trading on 12 June on the Nasdaq Global Select Market and Nasdaq Texas, offering 555,555,555 Class A shares. It is usually filed under space rather than AI - but SpaceX owns SpaceX Super Intelligence, the company that builds Grok and launched the SpaceXSI Partner Network this month.

That makes SPCX the only listed route to a frontier model lab today. Whether that is the right way to buy exposure to Grok is a separate question: AI is one part of a business whose main activity is launch and satellite, so the model work is not what moves the share price.

Cerebras: the cautionary one

Cerebras was the hottest AI IPO of the year and is the clearest argument for reading past a headline. It priced at $185.00 and closed its first day at $311.07, 68% above the offer. On 23 October it traded at $110.82 - roughly 40% below the IPO price and 64% off the first-day close. Its 52-week range runs from $106.13 to $386.34.

The underlying business did not collapse. Q2 showed cloud revenue up 281% year on year while hardware sales fell 23%, with cloud now about two-thirds of revenue against one-third a year earlier - a transition, not a decline. Backlog stood at $25.4 billion, including an OpenAI commitment of up to $20 billion of which $74 million had been spent through June. Current run rate is around $720 million.

The gap between a $25.4 billion backlog and a $720 million run rate is the entire disagreement about this stock, and it is a useful illustration of how AI backlogs are being priced generally.

The first public large-model companies are Chinese

Z.ai, formerly Zhipu AI, listed in Hong Kong on 8 January 2026 under stock code 2513, and MiniMax followed on 9 January under 0100. Both predate every Western model company by most of a year. Z.ai builds the GLM family, open-sourced under MIT since July 2025 - GLM-5.3 is the model involved in Cloudflare's Workers AI disclosure this week. MiniMax builds multimodal models plus Hailuo AI video and the Talkie and Xingye character apps, with Alibaba and Tencent among its investors.

The large caps, and what they actually are

Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, Micron, Palantir and Arm appear on every AI stock list and belong on one - but as companies where AI drives a share of a much larger business, not as AI companies. That distinction matters because their revenue, and therefore their share price, responds to things that have nothing to do with model quality: memory cycles, data-centre capex, defence contracts, licensing.

If you want exposure to AI specifically rather than to semiconductors and enterprise software generally, the first table is the honest version of the list. If you want exposure to the capital being spent on AI, the large caps are where that actually lands.

Not listed, and worth knowing

AnthropicS-1 filed 26 Oct 2026Will list on Nasdaq as ANT. Share count and price range not yet determined.
OpenAINot filedPointing at a 2027 window, up to $1 trillion discussed.
DatabricksNot filedNamed repeatedly in pipeline coverage; no filing in public view.

Anthropic is the one with a clock running. Its filing discloses roughly $630 billion of compute commitments across seven contracts, about $441 billion of it non-cancellable, against $17 billion of first-half revenue. We track filing status on the AI IPO tracker.

Why most AI stock lists are padded

A list of 85 AI stocks is a list of 85 companies that mentioned AI. The test that removes most of them is simple: if the company stopped doing AI tomorrow, would the business still exist? For Cerebras, MiniMax and Z.ai the answer is no. For Nvidia, Micron and Palantir it is yes, in a reduced form. For most of the other eighty it is yes, unchanged.

That is not a reason to avoid the large caps. It is a reason to know which bet you are placing, because the two groups will not move together when sentiment turns - as the reversal in Chinese AI shares this month showed while Chinese models were at their strongest measured position yet.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy shares in OpenAI or Anthropic?

Not yet. Anthropic filed an S-1 on 26 October 2026 and will trade on Nasdaq as ANT, but no share count or price range has been set. OpenAI has not filed and is pointing at a 2027 window. Any product offering exposure today is a private-market or derivative structure, not the stock.

What is the only listed company that builds a frontier AI model?

SpaceX (Nasdaq: SPCX), which owns SpaceX Super Intelligence - the company that builds Grok. It listed on 12 June 2026 at $135.00 a share.

Which AI companies listed in 2026?

Z.ai, formerly Zhipu AI, on 8 January in Hong Kong under 2513. MiniMax on 9 January in Hong Kong under 0100. Cerebras Systems on 14 May on Nasdaq under CBRS at $185. SpaceX on 12 June on Nasdaq under SPCX at $135.

What happened to Cerebras stock?

It priced at $185, closed its first day at $311.07, and traded at $110.82 on 23 October 2026 - about 40% below the IPO price. Q2 cloud revenue was up 281% year on year with a $25.4 billion backlog against a roughly $720 million run rate.

Are Nvidia and AMD AI stocks?

They are semiconductor companies where AI drives a large share of demand. If AI spending stopped, both businesses would continue in reduced form. That is a different kind of exposure from a company whose entire product is AI.

Why do some lists show 85 or more AI stocks?

Because they count any company that mentions AI. A useful filter is whether the business would still exist without AI. That removes most of the list.

Is this investment advice?

No. This page is a factual reference of which AI companies have listed shares and what they do. Nothing here is a recommendation, no stock is ranked, and we are not financial advisers.
