Prompts to Audit an AI Vendor's Safety Claims

Eight states sued OpenAI this week alleging ChatGPT was marketed as safe while its risks were withheld. Whatever the outcome, the practical lesson for anyone buying AI is that a vendor's safety page is marketing copy until you test it. These five prompts turn a vendor's own claims into questions you can check — run them against the vendor's documentation, not against the vendor's chatbot.

1
Separate the claim from the mechanism
First pass over a vendor security or trust page
Here is a vendor safety page: [PASTE]. For each safety claim, split it into (a) the claim, (b) the mechanism named to deliver it, (c) whether the mechanism is described specifically enough to verify. Flag every claim where (b) or (c) is missing. Do not evaluate whether the claims are good, only whether they are checkable.
2
Find the age and vulnerability gap
Child-safety and duty-of-care review
Read this product documentation: [PASTE]. Identify every statement about users under 18 or vulnerable users. Then list what the documentation does NOT say: what happens when age verification fails, what the default is for an unverified user, and who is accountable. Present as a two column table of stated versus unstated.
3
Reconstruct the incident path
Incident response and notification review
Given this vendor incident policy: [PASTE]. Walk through a hypothetical where the model gives harmful output to one of our users. At each step name who is notified, within what deadline, and what the vendor commits to do. Mark every step where the policy is silent or uses words like promptly or reasonable without a number.
4
Check the contract against the marketing
Pre-signature contract review
I will give you two documents: a vendor marketing page and the matching terms of service. Marketing: [PASTE]. Terms: [PASTE]. List every place the terms limit, disclaim or contradict something the marketing asserts. Quote both sides for each finding. Order by how much the gap would cost us if it mattered.
5
Write the questions they have not answered
Producing a vendor questionnaire
Based on everything in this vendor pack: [PASTE]. Write the ten questions I should send the vendor before signing, ranked by how much the answer would change my decision. Each question must be answerable with a document or a number, not an opinion. Do not include questions the pack already answers.
