The pushback, which is substantive
CANCER IS NOT ONE DISEASE
Dr Catharine Young of the Harvard Chan School of Public Health made the point most directly: cancer is more than 200 distinct diseases, each with different causes, biology and mechanisms. Researchers who study it rarely talk about curing cancer, because the phrase does not correspond to anything.
Her second point is the one worth sitting with: it is cruel to mislead patients this way.
The clinical objection has a specific shape and it is not about model capability. However good an AI system is at proposing a treatment, demonstrating that it works takes preclinical work and then clinical trials — and those consume most of a decade on their own.
