Promptwatch tracks which domains ChatGPT Search cites. Its data shows reddit.com holding a steady 3.83 percent average share of all ChatGPT Search citations from 18 July through 7 August 2026 — one of the largest of any domain on the web.
On 14 August that share fell below one percent. The 14 to 17 August average was 0.52 percent, an 86.4 percent relative decline. As recently as April, Reddit had been the single most-cited domain in ChatGPT Search at 4.14 percent.

The trigger was a retrieval change, announced nowhere

Promptwatch observed ChatGPT Search begin using the site: operator at scale. Queries scoped to a specific domain went from 0.37 percent to 16.8 percent of all background searches in one day.
Instead of searching the open web and citing what came back, ChatGPT started asking named domains directly. OpenAI did not announce it.
Grok, asked publicly about it on 19 August, gave a plausible account: the fanout change targets trusted domains to reduce spam and low-quality results. That is an inference from an AI rather than a statement from OpenAI, but it fits the shape of the data.
The part nobody is leading with
GEO practitioner Ira Bodnar published a broader breakdown comparing source-category mix under GPT-5.1 against GPT-5.6 Sol, OpenAI's current flagship since 9 July. That reframes it: this was not a Reddit event. It was a re-weighting of where ChatGPT pulls citations from.
And the destination matters more than the loss. The share did not move to other discussion platforms. It moved to structured, first-party sources — vendor documentation, help centres and brand-owned pages.
In that comparison, Reddit and third-party review sites do not merely decline. They round to zero.

This has happened before, to the same site
September 2025: Reddit's ChatGPT citation share fell from 29.2 percent to 5.3 percent within weeks. The trigger was Google removing the num=100 search parameter that OpenAI's data suppliers relied on to retrieve 100 results per request. RDDT fell 14.4 percent over five trading days, from $240.11 to $205.50.
Twice in under a year, one domain has lost more than 80 percent of its ChatGPT citation share in days. Neither time was it because Reddit changed.
THE LESSON UNDERNEATH BOTH EVENTS
Citation share behaves like a live ranking signal that can be re-weighted overnight, not like a backlink profile that erodes over months.
Anyone treating AI citation counts as an accumulating asset is measuring something that can halve on a Tuesday because a vendor changed a retrieval default.
The honest caveats
- Promptwatch calls the drop provisional and says it cannot yet rule out a data-collection issue on its own side. Search Engine Journal ran a piece specifically noting the explanation is incomplete.
- Percentages vary by methodology — which brands are sampled, which dates compared, how a citation is defined. Treat the direction and timing as reliable, not any single decimal.
- OpenAI has said nothing. Everything about intent is inference.
- Other independent citation panels reported a comparable ChatGPT-specific drop using different dates and different brand samples, which is the useful sanity check.
