Google is bringing Gemini Personal Intelligence to Android Auto and Google built-in vehicles, with access to Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search. The assistant can draw on personal context rather than answering generically.
The car is the strongest case anyone has for a voice assistant with personal data, and it is the one context where the usual objection does not apply. On a phone, asking an assistant to find a detail in your email competes with simply opening the email - which is faster and more reliable. Driving removes that option entirely, so the assistant is not a slower alternative to the screen, it is the only interface available.
It also raises the question the bank story raised this week in a different form: an assistant with access to Gmail and Calendar inside a vehicle shared between drivers is holding one person's context in a space several people use. Google has not detailed how profile separation works in built-in vehicles.
