THE SHORT VERSION
● What — Anthropic-managed deployment of Claude on Google Cloud
● Status — generally available, announced 22 October
● Context — one day after the OpenAI Model Garden announcement
● Not disclosed — which models, pricing, regions
Google announced general availability of an Anthropic-managed deployment option for Claude models on Google Cloud on 22 October. Which Claude models are covered, what the managed arrangement involves operationally, and what it costs were not specified in the announcement.
The sequencing is the story. On 21 October OpenAI said its frontier models and Codex are coming to Google Cloud's Model Garden and Marketplace, payable against existing Google Cloud spending commitments. A day later, Google is hosting an Anthropic-managed Claude deployment. Google Cloud now sells both of Gemini's main competitors.
That is a deliberate position rather than an accident. Google has concluded it would rather earn infrastructure revenue on a rival's model than watch the workload move to another cloud entirely — and for enterprises with committed Google Cloud spend, model choice has just stopped being a cloud decision. Worth asking your account team what "Anthropic-managed" actually means for your data residency and support path before assuming it matches the direct API.
