THE SHORT VERSION
● Today (8 Oct): GPT-6 Luna reaches Free and Go users, globally
● Yesterday (7 Oct): GPT-6 Sol went to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise
● What changed: replies render charts, forms, buttons and calculators, not just text
● Speed: streaming thinking cuts average wait by a claimed 44%
● Unresolved: what happens to source citations inside a rendered visual
As of today, the default ChatGPT answer is no longer a wall of text. Intelligent UI reached Free and Go users globally on 8 October 2026, a day after paid tiers got it.
What actually renders now
Instead of describing a calculation, ChatGPT builds the calculator. Instead of listing numbers, it draws a chart you can edit. OpenAI's own examples are a personal savings calculator, a multi-day hiking map and a bicycle mechanics walkthrough. Reported output types include tappable buttons, interactive charts, editable graphs, forms, diagrams and small tools — a bill splitter, a simple game.
The visuals appear to be on by default. Users who want fewer of them can turn them down rather than off.

Luna is the same model now available in the API at $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens — the exact price Anthropic set for Claude Haiku 5.5 on the same day.
Streaming thinking
GPT-6 starts producing the answer before it has finished reasoning, rather than making you watch a spinner. OpenAI puts the reduction in average wait time at 44%. That is a perceived-latency change more than a throughput one, but perceived latency is most of what users actually experience.
This is a response, not an invention
Google shipped generative UI in Gemini as Neural Expressive in May 2026. OpenAI is roughly five months behind on the concept and ahead on distribution, which is the trade it usually makes.
The part that matters if you publish anything
THE CITATION QUESTION
When ChatGPT answered in prose, sources sat in the text as links people could follow.
When it renders a calculator, where does the source go?
Citation behaviour inside visual formats is unresolved, and nobody has published how it works.
This is the change worth watching rather than the charts themselves. Referral traffic from AI assistants already arrives thin — an answer good enough to end the search sends nobody onward. An answer that is a working tool rather than a paragraph is further along that path again.
If your site earns traffic from being cited in AI answers, the practical move this week is to check whether your referrals from ChatGPT change shape over the next fortnight, not to rewrite anything yet. The rollout only finished today.
What to do about it
If you use ChatGPT daily: expect different-shaped answers for the same questions. Numeric and comparison questions are the ones that will change most.
If you build on the API: nothing changes today. Intelligent UI is a ChatGPT product feature, not an API capability.
If you publish: instrument first. Separate ChatGPT referrals in analytics now so you have two weeks of before-data when this is fully propagated.
Our guide to ChatGPT vs Gemini on real work covers how the two handle the same tasks, and is the comparison this update most directly affects.
FAQ
Do free ChatGPT users get GPT-6?
Yes. GPT-6 Luna reached Free and Go users globally on 8 October 2026. Paid tiers get GPT-6 Sol, which went out on 7 October.
What is Intelligent UI?
ChatGPT rendering interactive elements inside a reply — charts you can edit, forms, tappable buttons, and small tools like calculators — instead of answering only in prose.
Can I turn the visuals off?
They appear to be on by default, with an option to reduce how many you get rather than disable them entirely.
Is this available in the API?
No. Intelligent UI is a ChatGPT feature. The GPT-6 models are in the API, but the rendering behaviour is not an API capability.
Did Google do this first?
Yes. Gemini shipped generative UI as Neural Expressive in May 2026, about five months earlier.
