THE SHORT VERSION
● Round size — up to $30 billion
● Valuation — $1.25 trillion
● Lead — UAE investors, per CNBC
● Why now — same week Anthropic may file its S-1
CNBC reports that OpenAI is nearing a funding round of up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation, led by UAE investors. Terms are not final and the figures are reported rather than announced.
The number itself is almost less interesting than the timing. Anthropic is expected to file its S-1 as soon as today at a valuation Wall Street banks have floated between $1.8 and $2 trillion. In the same week, the two largest frontier labs have chosen opposite paths to capital: one going to public markets with full disclosure, the other raising privately from sovereign-linked investors with none.
For anyone building on these models, the practical consequence is the same either way — both are raising at a scale that implies compute commitments neither can walk away from, and those commitments eventually show up in API pricing. The difference is that Anthropic's obligations are about to become public record, running to roughly $450 billion over seven to ten years. OpenAI's are not.
