Replit has moved most of its AI spend from Anthropic to OpenAI, according to The Information, in an arrangement worth more than $100 million a year. OpenAI reportedly offered a discount of more than 30%. The reported trigger was Anthropic discontinuing the discount it had been giving Replit.
The switch itself was public earlier: chief executive Amjad Masad said on 17 October that Replit is no longer working with Anthropic and that OpenAI is now the default model. What is new is the money. A $100 million annual commitment moving on a 30% discount means the decision was made on price, between two models that Replit evidently considered close enough on capability for price to decide it.
That is the part worth sitting with. For most of the past two years the frontier labs competed on capability and customers paid what was asked. A nine-figure account changing hands over a withdrawn discount is a different market - one where the models are substitutable enough at the application layer that procurement wins the argument. Anthropic reported its first profitable month in August and filed its S-1 in October; holding margin on large accounts and holding the accounts themselves are now in tension.
