OpenAI Codex Review 2026: What It Costs, What's Included, and the August 31 Change
There is no Codex subscription. It ships inside every ChatGPT plan from Free to Enterprise, which makes "what does Codex cost" the wrong question — the right one is which ChatGPT tier you need. Free and Go cannot buy credits at all, so Plus at $20 is the real floor. And two models leave Codex on August 31.

A Capable Agentic Coder for Delegating Whole Tasks, Not Just Autocomplete
“Codex handles delegated, multi-file coding work — give it a task and a repo and it plans, edits across files, and runs in a sandbox rather than just suggesting lines.”
By AITools  · Delegated coding tasks, multi-file refactors, endpoint and test generation from clear specs  · Paid tier
✓ Pros

Agentic — handles whole tasks across multiple files, not just completions. Runs in a sandboxed environment. Good at well-scoped tickets and test writing. Frees you up while it works.

✗ Cons

Vague or large tasks still need significant cleanup. Requires careful code review before merging. Tied to OpenAI pricing and the surrounding tooling.
