- Best free: Meta AI. Fully featured, no paid tier exists, so nothing is being held back from you.

- Read before buying: the $20 tiers are not comparable. See the units below.
Everything, Priced

Everyone Charges $20. Nobody Sells You the Same Thing.
Five services have landed within a few cents of $20 for their main tier. Then they meter you in four different units:
| $20 tier | What you get | Unit |
| ChatGPT Plus $19.99 | ~150 messages | per 3 hours |
| Claude Pro $20 | ~100-225 messages | per 5 hours |
| Gemini AI Pro $19.99 | 1,000 credits | per month |
| Perplexity Pro $20 | 200 Pro searches / 20 Deep Research | per week / per month |
Those are not comparable, and the difference is not small. Run the theoretical ceilings - what you would get if you used every window - and ChatGPT Plus is in the tens of thousands of messages a month while Gemini AI Pro is 1,000 credits.
Three honest caveats on that arithmetic, because it sounds worse than it is. A rolling window is not a monthly quota, and nobody exhausts a 3-hour cap eight times a day for thirty days. A Gemini credit is not a message - some operations cost more than one. And Gemini AI Pro includes a 1M-token context window, which is a different product from a message count.
But the point survives all three: a monthly credit pool runs out and a rolling window refills. If you work in bursts - a heavy afternoon, then nothing for three days - the hourly-window services suit you and the monthly-credit ones will leave you rationing in week three. That is the actual difference between these plans and no comparison page states it.
The Top End Spans 25x
Below $20 the market is tight. Above it, it is not.
- ChatGPT Pro 500 - $500/month. The highest consumer price in AI. It adds an Ultrafast tier running up to 8x faster in Codex, around 300 tokens a second, at up to 6x standard token pricing. You are buying latency, not capability.
- SuperGrok Heavy - $300/month. 20 generations per hour.
- Claude Max 20x, Perplexity Max, Gemini AI Ultra - $200ish. Claude Max 20x quotes roughly 3,600 messages per 5 hours; Gemini AI Ultra gives 25,000 credits a month, 25x the AI Pro pool.
- Meta AI - $0. No paid tier at any price.
Two of those are speed purchases rather than quality ones. Pro 500 and Grok Heavy both sell throughput, which matters if you are blocked waiting on output and is worth nothing if you are not.
Which One, By What You Do
ChatGPT - the broadest
The only one with a $8 tier, which is the cheapest paid entry anywhere here and worth knowing about if Plus feels like too much. Plus at $19.99 gives roughly 150 messages per 3 hours. Above that the ladder runs $100, $200 and $500.
Best for: general use, the widest tool ecosystem, and anyone who wants a cheap paid step before $20.
Claude - the heaviest allowances
Free gives about 20 messages a day, which is the tightest free tier here. But Pro at $20 quotes 100-225 messages per 5 hours, and Max 20x quotes around 3,600 - the largest published message allowance on this page.
Best for: long sessions and sustained work. Worst free tier, best paid allowances.
Gemini - context, not messages
AI Pro at $19.99 buys 1,000 credits a month and a 1M-token context window. That context figure is the reason to choose it - no message count substitutes for being able to put an entire codebase or document set in one conversation.
Best for: very large documents. Watch: the credit pool is monthly and does not refill mid-month.
Grok - the widest ladder
Five tiers: free, Lite $10, SuperGrok $30, Plus $100, Heavy $300. SuperGrok at $30 is the only mid tier that is not $20, and it quotes about 30 per 2 hours. Image and video generation are bundled.
Best for: people already paying for X, and anyone wanting image and video in the same subscription.
Perplexity - search, not chat
Different product. Pro at $20 gives 200 Pro searches a week and 20 Deep Research runs a month - that second number is the binding one and it is easy to miss. Max at $200 removes both caps.
Best for: research with citations. Watch: 20 Deep Research runs is under one a day.
Copilot - bundled
Free basic access, or $19.99 as part of Microsoft 365 Personal - which also includes Word, Excel, Outlook and OneDrive. If you were paying for Office anyway the AI is effectively free.
Best for: existing Microsoft 365 subscribers. Judge it against the bundle, not against Claude.
Meta AI - free, and that is the whole proposition
Fully featured with no paid tier at any price. Nothing is gated behind an upgrade because there is no upgrade.
Best for: casual use, and anyone who wants to stop thinking about limits.
Decision Framework
- Spending nothing - Meta AI. No paid tier means no artificial ceiling.
- Cheapest paid step - ChatGPT Go at $8, the only sub-$10 tier here.
- Heavy bursts of work - ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro. Rolling windows refill; monthly credit pools do not.
- Very long documents - Gemini AI Pro, for the 1M-token context rather than the credit count.
- Research with sources - Perplexity Pro, remembering the 20 Deep Research runs a month.
- Already paying for Office - Copilot in M365 Personal at $19.99, which includes the Office apps.
- Images and video in the same plan - SuperGrok at $30.
- Waiting on output is costing you money - ChatGPT Pro 500 or SuperGrok Heavy. Both sell speed, not quality.
- Maximum message volume - Claude Max 20x at $200, roughly 3,600 per 5 hours.
FAQ
Which AI chatbot is best in 2026?
It depends on how you work rather than which model is strongest. For bursty heavy use, ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro meter in rolling hourly windows. For very long documents, Gemini AI Pro's 1M-token context is the differentiator. For sourced research, Perplexity. For zero cost, Meta AI has no paid tier at all. If you want the underlying models ranked rather than the subscriptions, see our October 2026 model rankings.
Why are they all $20?
Competitive anchoring - once one lands on a price the rest match it. What differs underneath is the unit: ChatGPT meters per 3 hours, Claude per 5 hours, Gemini per month in credits, Perplexity per week in searches.
What is ChatGPT Pro 500?
A $500 a month tier announced at OpenAI DevDay on 29 September 2026. It adds an Ultrafast mode running up to 8x faster in Codex, roughly 300 tokens a second, at up to 6x standard token pricing. It is the highest consumer AI price we are aware of.
Is there a genuinely free AI chatbot?
Meta AI, which is fully featured with no paid tier. Everything else uses the free tier as a trial - Claude's is the tightest at about 20 messages a day, Perplexity gives about 5 searches a day, Grok about 10 per 2 hours.
Which has the biggest usage allowance?
Claude Max 20x at $200 a month, quoted at roughly 3,600 messages per 5 hours. ChatGPT Pro 20x at $200 is described as effectively unlimited but without a published number.
Pricing verified 3 October 2026 from published comparisons, with the ChatGPT Pro 500 tier taken from OpenAI's DevDay announcement of 29 September 2026. Message allowances are as published by each vendor and are typically approximate, variable by model and subject to change without notice. We have not independently measured any of them.
