THE SHORT VERSION

● Raised — $1 billion Series A at a reported $6 billion valuation
● Led by — Index Ventures and Lux Capital
● The question — can advanced models be built with far less compute
● The irony — $1 billion to prove you do not need to spend billions

Flapping Airplanes raised a $1 billion Series A at a reported $6 billion valuation, led by Index Ventures and Lux Capital. The company is exploring whether advanced models can be built with significantly less computing power than frontier labs currently use.

A billion dollars at Series A to investigate computational efficiency is a contradiction worth sitting with. But it is a coherent bet in the week it was made: Anthropic's prospectus discloses roughly $450 billion in non-cancelable cloud obligations, Meta has guided to $135 to $145 billion of 2026 capex, and OpenAI is raising up to $30 billion. If the scaling assumption underlying all of that spending is even partly wrong, a company that proves it is worth considerably more than $6 billion.

Nothing has been published yet. There is no model, no benchmark and no paper — this is an investment in a thesis and a team. Treat it as a signal about where serious capital thinks the risk sits, not as evidence that the efficiency case has been made.
