Who makes Grok now: SpaceX. xAI was acquired in February 2026, rebranded SpaceXAI in July, and renamed again to SpaceX SI in October. The legal entity is still SpaceXAI LLC, which is why your invoices say SpaceXAI.

New to Grok: start with the complete guide, then the pricing tiers.

Deciding whether to pay: go straight to the SuperGrok tier comparisons.

Building with it: the API key walkthrough and the agents section below.

Grok has changed hands and changed names twice in nine months, and a lot of what is written about it online still refers to a company that no longer exists. This page is the index to everything we have published about it, organised by what you are actually trying to do — plus a straight answer on what the thing is called this week.

What it is called now, and why nobody is sure

The short version: Grok is a SpaceX product.

  • 2 February 2026 — SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock deal. xAI was valued at $250 billion against SpaceX at $1 trillion, for a combined $1.25 trillion.
  • May 2026 — Musk said xAI would cease to exist as a separate company, with Grok and X becoming SpaceX's AI division.
  • July 2026 — xAI was rebranded SpaceXAI.
  • October 2026 — renamed again to SpaceX SI. The official account became @SpaceXSI on 10 October.

The legal entity remains SpaceXAI LLC, trading as SpaceX SI. That is why subscription emails and card statements still read SpaceXAI while the website and social accounts say SpaceX SI. Both are correct. Neither is a scam, which is worth saying because Musk-adjacent fake branding is common enough that people reasonably check.

The same entity also owns X, Grokipedia, Grok Build, Grok Bot and — since the deal closed on 14 August 2026 — Cursor. Michael Nicolls, previously a Starlink vice president, has been president since 10 April 2026.

FAQ

Who owns Grok now?

SpaceX. It acquired xAI on 2 February 2026 in an all-stock deal valuing xAI at $250 billion against SpaceX at $1 trillion. Grok, X, Grokipedia, Grok Build, Grok Bot and Cursor all sit under the same entity.

Why does my Grok invoice say SpaceXAI when the website says SpaceX SI?

Because both are correct. The legal entity is SpaceXAI LLC, which is what appears on billing, and it trades as SpaceX SI, which is what appears publicly. xAI became SpaceXAI in July 2026 and SpaceX SI in October 2026 after Musk's 4 October post. The official account changed to @SpaceXSI on 10 October.

Is "SpaceXAI" a scam?

No. It is the registered legal name of the company that operates Grok. Checking is sensible — Musk-adjacent fake branding is common and lookalike domains are a real problem — but a Grok subscription billed by SpaceXAI LLC is the genuine article.

Did Grok change because of the acquisition?

The ownership change has not reset the product line. Grok versions, SuperGrok tiers and the API have continued through the transition. What changed is who the counterparty on your contract is, and what the company is called.

Where should I start if I am new to Grok?

The complete guide, then the pricing tiers page to work out which plan fits. If you are deciding whether to pay at all, go to SuperGrok vs free Grok first — it answers the question most people actually have.
