THE SHORT VERSION
Nvidia and AMD, with Google and Meta, published an open data centre blueprint. A second spec, with Microsoft added, covers how data centres survive grid disruption.
Nvidia and AMD have established an Open Data Center Specification v0.7 with Google and Meta as partners — a blueprint covering physical building layout, cooling and power architecture. A separate OCP Grid Resilience Specification, which adds Microsoft, sets out how data centres respond to power disruption and return to full operation.
Nvidia's stated rationale is that system makers, colocation providers and operators get predefined templates instead of handling many bespoke designs. Custom builds are slow, and the unstated corollary is straightforward: faster data centre construction means more chip and networking sales for the companies writing the specification.
The timing is not accidental. New York has a statewide one-year moratorium on data centre construction and Texas has halted new projects while it studies grid impact. A standard that makes builds faster and makes grid behaviour predictable is, among other things, an argument aimed at the states currently saying no.
