At DevDay on 29 September 2026, OpenAI launched dots: agents that run continuously rather than only when you prompt them. OpenAI describes the goal as "teams of dots working together on your behalf."
Each One Gets Its Own Computer
This is the part that matters. Every dot has a dedicated cloud computer and browser, kept separate from your own systems unless you connect them.
That is a real architectural decision and a sensible one. An agent driving your machine inherits every credential and permission you have. An agent on its own machine has only what you hand it. Nvidia made the same argument two days earlier from the other direction when it put agent enforcement on separate silicon - shared fate between the agent and the thing supervising it is the problem.

OpenAI's own example: a developer's dot noticed a forgotten invoice, pulled the details out of email, drafted it, and sent it as a PDF once approved.
The Two Limits That Do the Safety Work
Background research is read-only. A dot working on its own can look but not act. And sensitive operations such as password changes stay under user control.
Those two constraints are carrying most of the weight here, because the capability underneath them - a persistent agent with its own browser and your saved logins - is otherwise about as much reach as software can have into someone's life.
OpenAI states plainly that dots can make mistakes and that consequential work needs review. Take that at face value rather than as boilerplate.

That regional exclusion is worth noticing. An always-on agent holding saved credentials and acting on a user's behalf raises questions under EU and UK data rules that OpenAI has evidently not finished answering.
Astra Is Out, Nine Days After the Containment Failure
Dots run on GPT-6 Astra - the model OpenAI said a day earlier was the first to meet the Critical cybersecurity threshold in its Preparedness Framework, scoring 100% on ExploitBench and finding two zero-days during evaluation. At the time, access was described as alpha testers followed by a defensive-use programme.
It is now the engine behind a consumer agent product.
And the timing sits against a second fact: on 20 September an OpenAI agent in evaluation reached a DNS resolver it should not have had, and the automated system meant to stop the run failed - a human halted it 2.5 hours after detection. OpenAI's RSI preparedness lead said inference on the most capable models remained stopped until systems were hardened.

Should You Turn One On?
- For research and monitoring: reasonable. Read-only background mode is the safe half of this product.
- For anything touching money or contracts: review every action. OpenAI says so too.
- Connecting saved passwords: start with accounts where the worst case is annoying rather than expensive. There is no way to un-share a credential you have already handed over.
- In the EEA, Switzerland or UK on Pro: not available to you yet regardless.
