The UK government is establishing an independent, nonprofit AI biosecurity lab with £100 million in direct funding, sitting inside a wider National AI Biosecurity Initiative that also carries a separate £65 million for pathogen countermeasures. OpenAI and Anthropic are committing up to £200 million combined. Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research are named partners, alongside the UK Health Security Agency, the Animal and Plant Health Agency, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and the MHRA, which is working on approval pathways for AI-designed medicines.
The composition of that £200 million is the part worth reading twice. The BBC reports it is model credits, compute access and technical staff rather than cash. That is not a criticism - access to frontier models is exactly what a biosecurity lab needs and cannot buy at list price - but it means the headline £300 million total mixes two very different kinds of commitment. Cash can be spent on anything; credits can be spent on one vendor.
AI minister Kanishka Narayan framed the aim as bringing "world-leading scientific expertise to protect people from emerging biological threats". It lands two days after the Council for Science and Technology warned him that Britain risks becoming a high-value AI customer rather than a creator - and a lab funded in credits from two American labs is, depending on how you read it, either the answer to that warning or an illustration of it. The lab is not yet operating and no opening date has been given.
