Astra shows less of its reasoning
OpenAI's safety documentation states that Astra completes substantially more work without surfacing its reasoning steps. That is presented as an efficiency gain, and it genuinely is — fewer tokens, fewer round trips, faster answers.
It is also a smaller record to audit, and those are the same property described two ways. What sharpens it is that this is the first model to reach the Critical cybersecurity threshold — so the oversight surface is shrinking exactly where oversight matters most.

Astra is callable as gpt-6-astra, available on Amazon Bedrock and Microsoft Foundry, with a Fast mode at twice the standard speed for twice the standard price. Per-million pricing was still not published at launch and third-party figures disagree.
The consequential part is three new primitives: asynchronous function calls, mid-turn steering, and the ability to change reasoning effort without invalidating the prompt cache. That last one lets you run cheap shallow reasoning across a task and turn it up only where needed, while keeping cached context cheap — a structural cost change for long agent sessions.

On the AGI claim
Worth recording precisely. Greg Brockman called Astra a generational leap, said he personally thinks OpenAI may have reached AGI, and closed the briefing with a line about welcoming everyone to the AGI era.
That is a stronger statement than most coverage, including our own on Friday, conveyed. It remains a personal view offered at a product launch by the company president, and no independent evaluation supports or refutes it. Both of those things are true at once.
