What happened
SpaceX completed its $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, on 14 August. Two weeks later OpenAI notified SpaceX that it intends to wind down the contract providing OpenAI models to Cursor.
OpenAI's stated reason, in its own words, is that it cannot be confident SpaceX will use its technology within its terms of service, based on its experience with Musk-led companies violating contracts. It cites two specific precedents: that after Musk acquired Twitter — now part of SpaceX — the company broke the terms of its OpenAI contract alongside many others, and that xAI, also now part of SpaceX, admitted violating OpenAI's terms of service.
The mechanism is a change of control clause. OpenAI's custom agreement with Cursor gave it a limited window to cancel following a change in ownership, and that window opened when the acquisition closed.
THEY TOOK THE LATEST DATE, NOT THE EARLIEST
OpenAI says it is giving the maximum notice its contract provides specifically to maximise how long developers keep access. It could have moved faster and chose not to.
The trade is that no future models ship to Cursor between now and November. So access continues, but it freezes.
Astra is named in the reasoning
One line in OpenAI's post is worth isolating. Alongside the contract history, it says that as AI capabilities advance it has a new level of accountability to ensure its upcoming Astra model is used in accordance with its terms.
That connects this decision to the broader pattern of the month rather than to the Musk rivalry alone. OpenAI gated a cyber-capable model in August. Z.ai held GLM-5.3 weights for two weeks citing emergent capability. Anthropic disclosed a frontier model it will not ship. Four labs, one direction — and a supplier relationship where the buyer's compliance cannot be verified starts looking different when the model being supplied is more capable.
Cursor's response
Michael Truell, a Cursor co-founder and now a SpaceX executive, said on X that they are speaking with the OpenAI team to resolve the issue — noting that Cursor was one of the very first OpenAI users, that the teams have worked closely for years, and that Cursor had trusted the platform to be neutral infrastructure for its business.
SpaceX did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The word doing the work there is neutral. Cursor built its product on being able to route to whichever model was best, which was a genuine advantage while it was independent. That advantage depended on its suppliers not being its owner's competitors.

The tier maths is the practical part. Cursor Pro at $20 includes $20 of third-party credit, Pro+ at $60 includes $70, Ultra at $200 includes $400. The value of that credit depends on which third parties remain available. If you chose a higher tier specifically to run GPT models heavily, the calculation changes on 12 November.
The question nobody has answered
Anthropic also supplies Cursor, and has said nothing publicly about the acquisition.
The same structural argument applies to it — supplying a competitor-owned product helps that product compete against Claude Code, which currently ranks first among agent harnesses. And unlike OpenAI, Anthropic has no publicly documented contract dispute with Musk-led companies to point at.
If Anthropic follows, Cursor becomes a Grok-and-Composer product, which is a materially different tool from the one people subscribed to. If it does not, Cursor keeps genuine model choice minus one supplier. That decision matters more to Cursor users than this one does.
What to do before November
- Check what you actually route to. Cursor shows model usage. If GPT is a small share, this changes little for you.
- Do not prepay annually right now if GPT access is the reason you are on a higher tier. Annual billing saves 20 percent and locks you in past the shutoff date.
- Test the alternatives while you still have both. Codex at $20 and Claude Code bundled with Claude Pro at $20 are the direct substitutes, and comparing them now is easier than in November.
- Watch for an Anthropic statement. That is the announcement that decides what Cursor is in 2027.
