What Google Has Confirmed for Today's Keynote
Google I/O 2026 runs May 19–20 at Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View. The opening keynote begins at 10am PT, followed by a developer keynote at 1pm PT. Google confirmed the keynote agenda includes "the latest Gemini model updates," "agentic coding," and an Android XR glasses preview. Everything else is expected based on leaks, session schedules, and pre-event reporting.
New Gemini Model — Expected Today
A new flagship Gemini model is expected to be announced at the keynote — possibly labeled Gemini 4.0, Gemini 3.5, or a named variant. Sources from The Verge's Alex Heath describe the release as landing "roughly at the level of OpenAI's GPT-5.5" and "meaningfully short" of Anthropic's Claude Mythos. That framing is notable: being competitive with GPT-5.5 is now the minimum expectation for a major model release, not a headline achievement. Real pressure inside Google exists to close the coding performance gap specifically.
A leaked UI string inside the Gemini interface pointed to "Gemini Omni" — a unified model capable of generating text, images, and video in a single pipeline, without switching between specialized models for each modality.
Gemini Spark — Google's 24/7 Personal AI Agent
Multiple reports confirm that Google staffers have been testing a major upgrade to Gemini Agent codenamed "Remy," expected to launch as Gemini Spark. It is described as a "24/7 personal agent for work, school, and daily life" that can take actions proactively, interact with people, share documents, and make purchases using connected apps. A 9to5Google discovery found strings in the Google app beta version 17.20 where the agent greets with "What can I get done for you today?" and is described as "your 24/7 digital partner." This is Google's implementation of the Project Astra vision first teased two years ago — finally becoming a real product.
Gemini Desktop Agent — Computer Use Comes to Google
Google is also expected to announce a separate Gemini desktop agent capable of controlling a Mac or PC — organizing files, handling desktop tasks, and operating software autonomously. Google recently launched a Gemini desktop app for macOS, and the desktop agent builds on that foundation. This puts Google directly in competition with Anthropic's Claude Cowork and OpenAI's Codex for the autonomous computer-use market. Given Gemini's stronger vision capabilities, it may outperform both on screen-reading tasks.
Android XR Glasses — Consumer Preview Confirmed
Google confirmed Android XR glasses will be previewed at I/O. Samsung is building screen-free AI glasses with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker — the display-free model, which enables hands-free Gemini interaction, is confirmed for 2026. The display-equipped model has not been confirmed for this year. Samsung's Galaxy Glasses are also expected to be shown alongside Google's hardware. The glasses run Android XR and have access to Gemini natively — competing directly with Meta's Ray-Ban AI glasses.
Aluminium OS — Official Name Expected Today
Google has confirmed that "Aluminium OS" is an internal codename and the official product name will be revealed later in 2026 — possibly today at I/O. The OS is Google's Android-based replacement for ChromeOS, designed for the consumer laptop market with a bottom-dock Android-style desktop interface, virtual desktops, native Android app compatibility, and a "Link to iOS" app for iPhone interoperability. The first hardware — Googlebooks from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo — ships this fall.
Additional Expected Announcements
Based on confirmed session schedules and pre-event reporting: Veo video generation update (confirmed session), Lyria music AI update, Gemma open model family additions (May 20 session), Google AI Studio and Cloud agent toolkit pricing details, new Gemini subscription tier between $20 Pro and $250 Ultra, and "What's new in Chrome" session covering Gemini integration in the browser. Google Marketing Live follows on May 20 — the annual Google Ads conference where AI-driven ad products typically get announced alongside I/O.
