THE VERDICT
● Pro at $20 for almost everyone. Run /usage before assuming otherwise.
● Max at $100 only if you hit the Pro ceiling most weeks after trimming context.
● The thing to do first: price a month of API. $100 buys roughly 33 million input tokens at Sonnet 5 rates.
Max is a multiplier, not a different product
Claude Max is sold as a multiple of the Pro allowance. That matters today because the baseline moved for both — five times a smaller number is still five times, but the absolute figure is lower than it was yesterday.
| Pro | Max |
| Price | $20 | $100 or $200 |
| Weekly allowance | Baseline | Multiple of baseline |
| Changed today | Yes | Yes, proportionally |
| Shared pool | Chat, Code and Cowork | Chat, Code and Cowork |
| Model access | Same | Same, plus Opus 5 by default |
| Five-hour limits | Unaffected today | Unaffected today |
UPGRADING DOES NOT UNSHARE THE POOL
On both tiers, chat, Claude Code and Cowork draw from one weekly allowance. Paying five times more gives you a bigger shared pool, not three separate ones.
If your problem is that Cowork keeps eating your coding capacity, Max does not fix that. It postpones it.
Price the API before you upgrade
At Sonnet 5 rates of $3 in and $15 out, $100 buys roughly 33 million input tokens or 6.7 million output tokens. Real workloads mix both, so the practical figure sits between.
If a month of your actual usage would cost less than $100 on the API, Max is buying you a ceiling you do not need. If it would cost more, Max is buying a discount and a limit at the same time — which is fine, provided you know that is the trade.
Which one
| If you... | Pick |
| Have never hit a weekly limit | Pro. You are already overpaying attention to this |
| Hit it occasionally | Pro, and trim context. That recovers more than today took |
| Hit it most weeks after trimming | Price the API first, then decide |
| Need a hard budget cap | Max. The ceiling is the feature, and API has none |
| Run unattended agents | API with a per-run spend cap. A weekly pool is the wrong shape |
FAQ
Did Max limits change today too?
Max is priced as a multiple of the Pro allowance, so it moved proportionally. Run /usage to see your actual figure.
Is Max worth $100?
Only if you hit the Pro ceiling most weeks after trimming context. Price a month of equivalent API usage first.
Does Max separate the shared pool?
No. Chat, Claude Code and Cowork draw from one allowance on both tiers. Upgrading enlarges the pool rather than splitting it.
