ANTHROPIC'S COMPUTE OPTIONS — JULY 2026
● Current: SpaceXAI Colossus 1 — $1.25B/month, 300MW, 220K GPUs, through May 2029
● Colossus risk: Elon Musk "harms humanity" clause, competitor-supplier tension
● Potential new: Meta Compute El Paso — up to $10B over two years per Reuters (=$5B/year)
● Meta deal status: In talks, not signed
● Key advantage of Meta: No Musk clause, no Grok competitor conflict
● Key risk of Meta: El Paso facility not online until 2028 — SpaceXAI compute is live now
● Meta's interest: Building Meta Compute as a revenue line — Anthropic as a marquee customer
The Reuters report that Meta is in talks to lease compute to Anthropic resolves one of the more awkward facts in AI infrastructure: Anthropic currently pays $1.25 billion per month to Elon Musk's company for compute, while Musk's Grok competes directly with Claude. A compute deal with Meta would give Anthropic a supplier that is not a model competitor — Meta's Muse Spark 1.1 is a frontier model, but Zuckerberg has not built his company's identity around competing with Anthropic the way Musk has. The "harms humanity" clause in the SpaceXAI contract — which allows termination if Anthropic is found to harm humanity — is also not a concern with Meta. If Meta's El Paso facility comes online in 2028 as planned, Anthropic would have a compute source ready after the Colossus 1 contract expires in May 2029.
