The short version
Meta Muse was announced on 8 September 2026 and released in the US on iOS, Android and web. Free tier plus paid plans at $20 and $100 per month. Meta says there is no advertising and that it expects to profit by taking a small fee from transactions.
ChatGPT agent mode has no separate price. It is included with Plus at $20 and Pro. There is no free-tier access to it.
Architecture: a VM each vs a tab
Muse is the more ambitious build. Each user gets their own virtual machine in Meta cloud, driven through a chat interface, with a built-in browser so you can watch the agent work. You can rename it, give it an avatar, and set its communication style. It has a dedicated email address of its own.
The piece worth copying is Sentinel, a permission layer that controls which services the agent can reach and distinguishes read access from write access. That read/write split is exactly the distinction Charles Schwab and JPMorgan arrived at independently this month when deciding what to allow.
ChatGPT agent mode is narrower by design. It takes a cursor, highlights the interface in blue so you can see what it is touching, and completes tasks like booking or document creation. Note that ChatGPT Atlas, the standalone browser, shut down on 9 August 2026 and was folded into a single desktop application alongside the ChatGPT app and Codex. Anyone comparing Muse against Atlas is comparing it against something that no longer exists.
Reach: partners vs blocks
Meta announced commerce and productivity partners including Stripe, Shopify, Walmart, Instacart, GitHub and Notion. At a 23 September event it added a video avatar, control of macOS apps, smart glasses integration via a wake word, and a palm-sized device called Muse Charm.
Then the doors started closing. Amazon blocked Muse from its retail site on 21 September - roughly two weeks after launch. Amazon stated that Meta did not notify it, that the agent did not identify itself while browsing, and that it appeared to capture customer credentials. Meta responded that Muse has no access to passwords or payment methods and that credentials are stored securely. Forbes connected Amazon decision to its advertising business and the shopping data agent traffic would obscure.
Schwab CEO Rick Wurster named Muse specifically on 16 October when describing agents his firm blocks in the tens and twenties each week.
The two things to know before you pay Meta
Training data is on by default. Meta uses your queries for model training unless you turn it off. Meta has said a version that cannot see your workspace will arrive before the end of 2026 - which is a clear admission that the current one can.
The human-in-the-loop report. 404 Media reported that during beta testing, some phone calls Meta presented as automated were completed by human call-centre workers. Meta said internal testing of that kind is standard and that it was collecting feedback ahead of a public release with disclosures. Weigh that against any demo you have seen.
Pick by what you need done
| If you want to | Use |
| Get work done today on sites that will not block you | ChatGPT agent mode, $20 Plus |
| Control read vs write access per service | Meta Muse - Sentinel has no equivalent in ChatGPT |
| Shop on Amazon with an agent | Neither. Amazon blocks Muse and has no agent agreements. |
| Keep queries out of training by default | ChatGPT agent mode; on Muse you must turn it off |
| Spend nothing | Muse free tier. ChatGPT agent mode has no free access. |
Verdict
Muse is the better-designed agent and the more likely to hit a wall. Its permission model is ahead of the field, and its architecture - a VM per user, a visible browser, its own email address - is what agentic computing probably looks like in two years. But an agent is only worth what it is allowed to touch, and in six weeks Muse collected a block from the largest retailer in the US and a named call-out from a major brokerage.
ChatGPT agent mode does less and is bundled into a subscription most heavy users already hold. For now that is the practical answer. Revisit when Meta publishes how Sentinel identifies itself to the sites it visits, because that is the thing Amazon said was missing.
