THE VERDICT
● Claude Max if you want a predictable bill and can live with a ceiling.
● API billing if you need no ceiling and can tolerate a variable bill.
● From 14 September: the Max ceiling drops 17 percent, which moves the crossover point.
The two models
| Claude Max | API billing |
| Cost | $100 or $200 flat | Per token, unbounded |
| Ceiling | Yes, and dropping 17% on 14 Sept | None |
| Bill predictability | Exact | Varies with usage |
| Shared across products | Chat, Code and Cowork share one pool | Separate per call |
| Sonnet 5 rate | Not applicable | $3/$15 from 31 August, plus tokenizer change |
THE CALCULATION
At Sonnet 5 rates of $3 in and $15 out, $100 buys roughly 33 million input tokens or 6.7 million output tokens. Real workloads mix both, so the practical figure sits between.
If your month would cost less than $100 on the API, Max is buying you a ceiling you do not need. If it would cost more, Max is buying you a discount and a limit at the same time.
What changes on 14 September
Claude Code weekly limits settle at 25 percent above the pre-May baseline, which Anthropic itself describes as a 17 percent reduction against current levels. Index it: 100 before May, 150 today, 125 from the 14th.
So a Max subscription buys less than it did in August at the same price. That does not automatically make API billing better — it moves the crossover point, and the direction depends entirely on your usage.
Which one
| If you are... | Pick |
| Never hitting your current limit | Claude Pro at $20. You are overpaying on Max |
| Hitting it weekly | Price a month of API usage before renewing Max |
| Needing a hard budget cap | Max. The ceiling is the feature |
| Running unattended agents | API, with a spend alert set. Agents do not respect a weekly pool politely |
