Different ideas of an AI character
Whispers from the Star is one relationship. You are the only person receiving a signal from Stella, an astronaut stranded on an unknown planet, and you talk to her by voice through a communicator. She messages you through the day about what she is seeing, asks for advice, and what you say changes what she does and whether she survives. The AI conversations are fully voiced and the voice was built with a real actor, so unscripted replies still sound performed rather than synthesised.
AI2U is a cast. NPCs run on LLM-generated dialogue with distinct personalities, voiced by text-to-speech, and they make their own judgements about what you have done rather than checking a flag. Breadth instead of depth.
What is running underneath
AI2U is unusually candid here, and it is a point in its favour even though it reads as a drawback. The Steam page states it connects to third-party services for AI content generation and names them: Azure OpenAI Service, Gemini LLM and Minimax TTS. You agree to a third-party EULA, and broadband is listed in both the minimum and recommended specs. AlterStaff states that AI systems are not used to collect or learn from personal data - the developer claim, not an audited finding.
Whispers from the Star does not name providers on its store page. Anuttacon does warn that player input can steer the AI toward strong language or sensitive subjects, with safety filters in place.
Neither runs offline.
Buy which
- Never played an AI game - Whispers from the Star. Five dollars cheaper, there is a free demo, and one well-voiced character is a clearer demonstration than a cast of several.
- Want the best-reviewed - AI2U. 88% of 1,905 is the highest in the category, and recent reviews at 82% of 287 show it holding rather than fading.
- Care who processes your conversations - AI2U, oddly. It is the one that tells you.
- Want to hear whether unscripted dialogue can sound good - Whispers. The real-actor voice is the difference.
- Want it offline - neither. Look at AI Roguelite at $14.99, which runs local models on your own GPU.
Verdict
Whispers from the Star is the better first purchase and AI2U is the better game by the numbers. At a five-dollar gap that is a real decision rather than a formality.
The honest test for either: if you remove the model, is there a game left? For both of these the answer is no, which is why they sit at the top of the category while more expensive AI titles with scripted fallbacks sit at Mixed.
