The Nvidia-SK $500B deal has a direct implication for AMD: SK Hynix supplies HBM to both Nvidia and AMD. A long-term exclusive or preferential supply arrangement with Nvidia — especially for HBM4, which is next-generation — constrains AMD's access to the memory substrate its MI450X chips require. AMD also works with Micron and Samsung for HBM supply, which provides some diversification. But SK Hynix at 60% market share is not easily replaced, and a preferential Nvidia supply arrangement at the $500B scale creates a meaningful supply chain advantage for Nvidia in the next generation.
Nvidia Vera Rubin advantages: CUDA ecosystem lock-in (every AI framework defaults to CUDA), SK Hynix HBM4 supply secured, DSX factory architecture for turnkey deployment, Vera Rubin designed with transformer architecture workloads from the start.
AMD MI450X advantages: Available now (Vera Rubin is 2027), hyperscaler supply diversification rationale, improving ROCm software stack, price competition pressure on Nvidia, and Microsoft/Meta relationships creating real alternative deployment paths.
